WHAT IS LONG TERM CARE (LTC)?
It is NOT medical insurance. So what does it cover? It covers “Activities of Daily Living” which include eating, bathing, getting dressed, toileting, transferring, continence and dementia. Note: care does not have to occur in a nursing home – LTC will also cover care in your own home!
WHY DO WE NEED IT?
Due to medical advances, we’re living longer. But as we age we may develop arthritis or other illness or have an accident that makes it difficult or impossible to perform one or more of these daily tasks.
WILL MY EXISTING INSURANCE OR MEDICARE COVER LTC?
No. No other insurance will cover assistance with Activities of Daily Living.
WHAT ARE THE CHANCES THAT I’LL NEED IT?
Statistics show there’s a 75% chance you’ll need Long Term Care.
- Chance of experiencing a house fire: 1 in 1200
- Chance of being in a car accident: 1 in 240
- Chance of needing long-term care: 3 in 4
WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE IT?
There’s not much that will drain your resources quicker than not having LTC and having to pay for care out-of-pocket. And if you rely on a friend or family member to care for you, it will likely destroy (or certainly disrupt) their lives – not to mention that it’s an extremely difficult task for the caregiver (both physically and mentally).
WHY DOESN’T EVERYBODY HAVE LONG TERM CARE?
Everybody should have it. But LTC can be expensive and difficult to qualify for medically (especially after age 65) – these factors deter many people. (See the note below – there are alternatives to LTC if these factors deter you).
