President Obama famously said “If you like your current health insurance plan, you can keep it.” Or can you? Here’s the answer: You can keep your current plan only if the effective date is March 23, 2010 or earlier. Why? Because that’s the date healthcare reform was passed. So if you had your plan BEFORE healthcare reform became the law of the land, you can keep it. That’s called a “Grandfathered Plan”.

But if you bought your plan AFTER healthcare reform became the law of the land, then you have to purchase a new, conforming plan by January 1, 2014 (as you can imagine, there are a few exceptions to this rule).
