In choosing a dental plan, it’s important to remember these basics…

Dental PPO’s generally have waiting periods before you can receive care (other than normal cleanings or simple fillings). You may have to wait 6 months to 1 year before getting major procedures such as crowns, etc. PPO’s also have annual maximums – they usually pay a maximum of $1000 – $1500 maximum per year.

Dental HMO’s generally do not have waiting periods or annual maximums – and they are generally less expensive than PPO’s. So if you don’t have a specific dentist in mind, you may want to choose an HMO so you can avoid the waiting periods and annual maximums.

If you do have a specific dentist in mind, I suggest calling your dentist’s office and asking what plan they suggest since they know what they accept, and they know the type of care you receive. Your dentist will likely say “We take any PPO”. If so, check the various waiting periods and annual maximums while you’re shopping for a PPO.
